Reindeer sleeping bags were only issued in Scandinavia. And one could put the feet into the rucksack. (Not in the technical compressed one nowadays, but in the hand made of former times it was indeed.)ĭuring WW2 also the Germans slept in or under the coat, but wrapped a small blanket around the legs. Normal soldiers usually slept until 1945 in a barn in the straw or hay what is quiet comfortable. I suspect it wasn't, and I can hazard a guess as to why - if an apocalypse of the type depicted in such movies ever came to pass in Russia, it's a safe bet that half the country wouldn't notice the difference, and the other half would be too drunk to notice. I can't remember if the "post-apocalypse" genre of movies was ever popular in Russia. Having said that, we've also seen plenty of "Meanwhile in Russia" memes and videos - Russia makes West Virginia look like the Lower East Side of Manhattan. Times have changed, of course, and like us, the average Russian of today is a rather soft and coddled creature by comparison to his peasant forbears during the time of the Tsar or Stalin. Most of it has left me with the same reaction I had to Russian field rations - a sort of appalled fascination. Search my content and you'll see where I've spent a bit of time acquainting myself with primitive Russian kit. "When one side goes numb and the other freezes stiff, both men turn over simultaneously and the fitful sleep of the soldier continues." Note this passage from the link above, just by way of illustration: I've said before that the Russian soldier carried less gear than any of his European counterparts - a well-documented fact - and that the Russian/Soviet soldier's experience was one of endurance and hardship - another well-documented fact. I'd read this elsewhere, and I'm not surprised to see confirmation of the story. Just a bit ago I found this blog entry on how Red Army Soldiers slept without blankets or sleeping bags.
